It’s been nine years since the release of Rogue One, the Star Wars Story that introduced us to the likes of Cassian Andor and his droid buddy K2-SO; and only three years since the first season of Andor, the critically acclaimed prequel series that showed how a civilian can become thrusted into the Rebellion against the Empire. In Season 2 of Andor, streaming on Tuesday, April 22, 2025 on Disney+, we will finally learn just how Andor gets paired up with K-2SSO, but don’t expect a full on adventure with the duo – as it’s all in service of a larger story that spans the 12 episode season.

What writer Tony Gilroy and team have put down here is absolutely brilliant, expertly weaving together layers and threads that weave into a collective tapestry of fascism, politics, corruption, genocide, and revolution. Its depiction of ordinary citizens, including those who work for the Galactic Empire, seen wrestling with their surroundings, volleying facts from disinformation and rumors, weighing ethical actions versus pure evil and seeing how each one reacts to it. If there was a show that’s made for the time we’re in, this is it.

Season 2 is set up just a little differently than the first, with every three episodes serving as one chapter, or one year, leading up to the events in Rogue One. You’ll see a “BBY” ahead of each three episode ark with a number, which means it’s that many years “Before the Battle of Yavin” (seen in Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope). And each chapter is nearly three hours of the best Star Wars ever put to the screen.

While Rogue One on its own was neat exercise in that all of the characters (spoiler alert) die at the end, we’ll now care harder about Cassian Andor thanks to these two seasons of Andor. In a way, the episodic nature of television may have been the best route for Rogue One, but it’s unfortunate this is where it ends… for now. While season 2 definitely marks the end of the journey for many of the returning characters, we can all hope that there would be enough interest to see even more from those who remain.
Andor Season 2 airs today on April 22, 2025.
