Sonny’s amazing Astro Organ keyboard has a mind of its own and will occasionally play itself without anyone’s hands on the keys. Sonny purchased Astro second-hand; the pawn shop records indicate it was previously owned by a blue Ortolan jizz-wailer named Max Rebo, who claimed he sold it for a song (because once the Red Ball Jett organ came out, the Astro Organ just wasn’t in demand).

Sonny Eclipse’s backup singers are the invisible Space Angels, but no one is sure if they are a trio, a quartet, maybe even more (or less?) The Space Angels first began singing with Sonny during a gig on the planet Mars, but the girls’ planet of origin remains a mystery.

Sonny’s stage crew includes a technician named Mike Feedback, who occasionally pulls double duty as Sonny’s announcer.

Sonny (above left) is believed to be the ‘cousin’ of Officer Zzzzyxxx (above right) from the Star Tours Spaceport in Tokyo. While Sonny hails from Yew Nork City on the planet Zork, Officer Zzzzyxxx’s employment records suggest he originated in a region called Joo Nerzey on the same planet. Inhabitants of this world call themselves Zorkies and their skin pigmentation can range from standard human fleshtones to more colorful hues like ‘blue or pink or polka dot and purple-green’.

During his act, Sonny makes passing mention of various members of his family, including his six-eyed, twelve-nostriled estranged wife (Luna), his parents (father Sola and mother Parsha), and his mother-in-law (Tota Leigh Clipse)… but he never mentions his cousin Officer Zzzzyxxx, the only other member of the Zorkie race who currently resides on Earth. Some theorize that the two had a falling-out over Sonny’s childhood dream to pursue a musical career.

Sonny’s play list includes eight songs: the auto-introductory “My Name is Sonny Eclipse”; an untitled ballad about the loveliness of Earth; the self-explanatory “Gravity Blues”; the 50’s style doo-wop number “Hello Space Angels”; the spoonerism extravaganza “Yew Nork, Yew Nork”; the jazzy “Starlight Soup and Salad”, which is basically Cosmic Ray’s menu set to music; the obligatory love song “O Bright Little Star”, dedicated to Sonny’s estranged wife Luna; and an awesome little upbeat tour of our own solar system entitled “Planetary Boogie”. Sonny banters in true lounge-crooner style in between songs, and the whole act repeats approximately every 25 minutes.

Even though two of Sonny’s songs, “Gravity Blues” and “Planetary Boogie”, might almost seem to be educational– especially when compared to Schoolhouse Rock classics like “Victim of Gravity” and “Interplanet Janet”– there are in fact only passing similarites. Sonny’s offerings are intended solely to entertain, and as a result, occasionally the songwriters have sacrificed reliable facts in favor of better rhymes or more clever lyrics.

Astro: rim shot, canned laughter
Sonny: (spoken) Hey, I’m on a roll now. You know, I’d still be up there performing on the moon, but I heard it was going broke. It was down to its last quarter!
Astro: canned laughter
Sonny: (spoken) But honestly, folks, I really do love your beautiful planet Earth. It’s big and round and blue and green… just like my mother-in-law!
Astro: kettle drum, canned laughter
Sonny: (spoken) If I may be serious here for a moment, I’ve seen a lot of planets, but I gotta tell ya, Earth… from out in space… is one of the loveliest sights I’ve ever seen.
Astro: begins new song
Sonny: (spoken) Now listen, while I dial up a little bossa SUPERnova and I’ll tell you exactly what I mean.
Sonny: (singing) Out in space, Earth looks so small
floating there like a tiny blue ball
but come closer and you’ll see a world around you
that will astound you, I’m glad I found you
out in space!
[Indistinct] to spare in the grandeur of space
but Earth my friends is the heart of the place
and the reason this is so is something Earthlings always show
that love’s the center of the universe!
And I love you
yes, I love you
ever since I met you I just can’t come down to Earth
I’m so happy I dropped by to see your world
your great continents, I went and saw some
but your love’s the thing’s that really awesome
oh your lovely planet truly means the world to me

And I love you
yes I love you
ever since I met you I just can’t come down to Earth
I’m so happy I dropped by to see your world

your great continents, I went and saw some
but your love’s the thing’s that really awesome
oh your lovely planet truly means the world to me- eee- eee

whoa-oh-ohh
Astro: Song ends, applause, whistles, new blues-y song begins
Sonny: (spoken) Now I’d like to do a song about the *second* strongest Earthly force. I’m talking about…
Sonny: (singing) Gravity! You got a hold on me, yes you do. Yes you do.
Astro: bass guitar riff
Sonny: (singing) Gravity! You got a great big hold on me, oh yeah.
I can’t see ya, can’t even feel ya, and now I know you will never set me free.
Since the world is round, must be people upside down.
What’s keeping them from falling off and floating all around?
All those people Down Under are beginning to wonder
if you would ever cut the juice and set ’em loose, goodbye!
Hello, Gravity. Mean old Gravity. I am green but Gravity, you’re giving me the blues.
Gravity! Set me free! You’re a magnet, of course, a famous Earthly force, yeah.
Gravity! Let me be! If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t weigh what I do.
Gravity, you’re weighing heavy on my mind, all the time.
Gravity, why do you treat me so unkind? I never did nothing to you.
I can’t see ya, can’t even feel ya, but I’m green and Gravity you’re giving me the blues.
Astro: blues riff ends, canned applause, whistles
Sonny: (spoken) Thank you, thank you very much! What a crowd! You know, I recently heard the universe was expanding. Guess it’s time to loosen the old asteroid belt!
Astro: Rim shot, canned laughter
Sonny: (spoken) For those of you just joining me, I’m Sonny Eclipse, bringing you the ‘Sonny Side’ of entertainment all the way from the planet Zork!
(Squeal of feedback on the mike)
Sonny: (spoken) Whoa! Uh, can you guys bring this thing down a bit? Testing.. testing… yeah, that’s better, thanks. Ahem. As I was saying, we’re here at the Starlight Lounge, doing our little show from opening to closing every day. And if you’ve been out there wondering where my backup vocals are coming from… heh, frankly, so am I! They’re invisible! I call ’em my Space Angels.
Astro: new song begins
Sonny: (singing) I will never forget that fateful day, the first time the Space Angels came my way.
I was playing a club on the red planet Mars, and after I’d sung my first opening bars,
it was time for my backup to sing harmony, but they didn’t show up; it was all up to me.
I stopped the music, couldn’t sing it alone, so I started to pack up and rocket back home…
Astro: glissando of a harp
Sonny: (spoken) When suddenly I heard them– but no one was there–
those beautiful voices from out of thin air.
They arrived just in time, invisibly absurd.
As they saved my act, this is what I heard:
Angels: Halo, halo, halo. We’re the Space Angels. Woo-ooo-ooo. Oo-ooo-ooo-ooo.
Astro: doo-wop number
Sonny: (singing) Hello, Space Angels. So nice to hear ya
though I can’t see you now, it’s nice to be near ya.
You came when I needed you.
Angels: I needed you
Sonny: (singing) from out of the blue
Angels: Out of the blue
Sonny: (singing) My act had no polish until there was you
Outer Space Angels, my heavenly chorus.
Whenever you sing with me, my fans all adore us
you [wing?] all my harmonies,
Angels: My harmonies
Sonny: (singing) you’re always on cue
Angels: Always on cue
Sonny: (singing) Space Angels just know what to do.
Sometimes at night, when I turn out the light and I’m scared and alone,
I start singing a song and then before long I hear a familiar tone…
Astro: glissando of a harp
Angels: Halo, halo, halo. We’re the Space Angels. Woo-ooo
Sonny: (singing) Hello Space Angels, so nice to hear ya

though I can’t see you now, it’s nice to be near ya.
You came when I needed you, from out of the blue
Space Angels just know what to do…
Angels: We’ve got you hand in hand
Sonny: (singing) Space Angels will always come through…
Angels: Your wish is our command
Sonny: (singing) Space Angels, I love you!
Angels: Us too!
Astro: canned applause, whistles
Sonny: (spoken) Thank you, and thank you, girls. Hey, how about those Space Angels?
Angels: (spoken, not in unison) Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.
Sonny: (spoken) Anybody out there celebrating a birthday today?
Astro: sound of party favors
Sonny: (spoken) Well, happy birthday to you! Any honeymooners in the audience?

Astro: “here comes the bride”, rim shot
Sonny: (spoken) Hey, congratulations, you two! Now, listen to Sonny when I tell ya, I never knew the true meaning of happiness until I got married… but then it was too late!
Astro: kettle drum, canned laughter
Sonny: (spoken) Well, it’s high time I told you a little something about myself. When I was just a little Zorkie, I wanted nothing more than to get into intergalactic show biz.
Astro: new song begins
Sonny: (spoken) Lucky for me, I was raised in the entertainment capital of my planet Zork… Yew Nork City!
Sonny: (singing) Yew Nork!
Angels: Yew Nork!
Sonny: (singing) Is my home town. Yew Nork!

Angels: Yew Nork!
Sonny: (singing) Is upside down. And every single part of it is underground.
‘Cuz up above the surface, there’s nothing around.
Angels: We’re talking about all over town.

Sonny: (singing) Yew Nork!
Angels: Yew Nork!
Sonny: (singing) On my planet Zork! Yew Nork!

Angels: Yew Nork!
Sonny: (singing) Really pops my cork! There’s nothing like a picnic out in Central Pork!
Sonny and Angels: (singing) We know you love Yew Nork!
Sonny: (singing) The Central Grand Station [low-rise?] Yew Nork banks
and shows on Second-Forty Street
Angels: They’re really special!
Sonny: (singing) our baseball heroes are the Yew Nork Eeyanks
The green of Staten always get beat
but I’m a fan, man!
Yew Nork!

Angels: Yew Nork!
Sonny: (singing) is quite a town, the subway’s up and the streets are down
that topsy-turvy city will turn your frown around, I know you’ll love Yew Nork
Astro: vamping music, calliope
Sonny: (spoken) Oh I can see it all now– the lights, the excitement, giant canyons of glass and steel…

There’s a caxi tab! Caxi! Hey caxi!!
Astro: vehicle brakes to a halt
Sonny: (spoken) Hey, in Yew Nork, you know what’s worse than raining cats and dogs? Hailing caxi tabs!
Astro: horn honks, engine idling
Caxi Tab Driver: Everybody’s a comedian in this town. Now where you going, mac? I ain’t got all day.
Astro: vehicle door opens
Sonny: (spoken) Hey, take me down to uptown. I want to see that big, green lady out there in the harbor… my mom!
Astro: door slams, tires squeal with acceleration
Sonny: (spoken) Hey, watch out for that–
Astro: impact
Sonny: (spoken) –ooh!– waysub station.
Astro: steam hisses, music resumes
Sonny: (spoken) Look, there’s Av Parkenue! Harnegie Call! The Dorfwal Astoria! Saint Rickpat’s Cathedral! Squadison Mare Garden! The Tavern FOR the Green! And there is the Liber of Statuety!
Astro: Yew Nork national anthem

Sonny: (singing) At the Fellerocker Plaza you can water-skate
Angels: On old Waybroad you can hear ’em sing
Sonny: (singing) The very tallest building is the Pire-em State, climbed by hairy old Kong King!
Sonny: (spoken) That guy went ape, man!
Sonny: (singing) Yew Nork!
Angels: Yew Nork!

Sonny: (singing) Where nobody’s mean… Yew Nork!
Angels: Yew Nork!
Sonny: (singing) Where all the folks on the scene

are blue or pink or polka dot and purple-green
in old…
Angels: In old…
Sonny: (singing) Yew Nork!
Angels: Yew Nork!
Sonny: (singing) In bold…
Angels: In bold…
Sonny: (singing) Yew Nork!
Angels: Yew Nork!
Sonny: (singing) I may be green and dorky
but proud to be a Zorkie
Sonny and Angels: (singing) In my hometown Yew Nork!
Astro: finale
Sonny and Angels: (singing) Yew Nork!
Astro: canned applause, whistles
Sonny: (spoken) Hey, yessir! Yew Nork City, up there on my planet Zork. That’s where I got this amazing Astro Organ. Picked it up at a pawn shop. Got it for a song!
Astro: rim shot, canned laughter
Sonny: (spoken) But hey, I love being here in Cosmic Ray’s beautiful Starlight Lounge. In fact, I wrote a lilttle song about the menu. So without further ado, here’s some musical food you can taste with your ears.
Astro: intro
Sonny: (singing) Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe’ is a super galaxy franchise.
The menu is from outer space… including the fries!
Starlight soup and salad, and his Blastoff burgers too…
An ice cream from the milky Milky Way, arrive in trips from rocketships especially for you!
Starlight soup and salad, and some Cosmic chicken meat…
Lightyears away, old Cosmic Ray sends them to his restaurant for Earthlings to eat!
What a treat!
One day I said to Cosmic Ray, “My pay is really slightly pallid…
I’d like to get a Cosmic Raise today”, but instead he gave me soup and salad!
(scatting) Zabo zabo, zoop zoop zoop-a, zoop and zalad doo!
Astro: instrumental break
Sonny: (scatting) Boop sweep-bee doo!
Sonny: (singing) Starlight soup and salad, that’s the only thing that Ray don’t lack!
So go up to the counter and place your order,
Then pick it up and turn around and bring it right back!
(scatting) Zop bee zoop zoop zalad dee doo
(singing) So place your order, pick it up and bring it right back!
Astro: plays final note
Sonny: (spoken) I’ll be waitin’ for ya!
Astro: canned applause and whistles
Sonny: (spoken) Thank you, thank you! You’re too kind. Hey, Cosmic Ray, if you’re out there… I was only kiddin’ about the raise, man. Actually, folks, Ray pays me weekly– *very* weakly!
Astro: canned laughter, with (cowbell?) sound effect
Sonny: (spoken) And speaking of money… You know, romance is the same in every galaxy, on every planet you go. Boy creature meets girl creature, stars in their eyes… Well, you know the story. (inhales) I’d like to dedicate this next number to my girl. Ah, she has the most beautiful purple eyes… all six of ’em!
Astro: canned laughter
Sonny: (spoken) She has almost perfect eyesight too: 20/20/20/20/20/19!
Astro: canned laughter
Sonny: (spoken) That’s not all, she has twelve nostrils!
Astro: canned laughter
Sonny: (spoken) I’ll tell ya, that girl really blows me away!
Astro: canned laughter

Astro: musical intro
Sonny: (spoken) So I wrote this song especially with her in mind, and with your kind permission I’d like to sing it for you now. Goes something like this…
Sonny: (singing) O bright little star, though I’m lightyears away from her now
I can’t help but to feel that somehow we’re both wishing on you…
I imagine your light in her eyes as she gazes up into the skies.
At this moment does she realize you are in my eyes too?
O bright little star, is she wishing the same wish as me?
that somewhere out in space there may be a nice planet for two?
Where someday we’ll be all alone in our own galaxy
dancing under a star canopy, and our favorite is you

Someday, somewhere, I will find her in a universe up above
tell her, little star, I’ll surround her with all my love
Goodnight little star, watch and keep her till we meet again
in the glow of a love without end, shining brightly like you do
and every night, as we gaze at your loving starlight,
we will know that when wishes are right, they will always come true-oo-oo!
Astro: song ends, canned applause, whistles
Sonny: (spoken) Thank you, thank you very much! And how about those Space Angels? Weren’t they just beautiful? Well, hey, my name is Sonny Eclipse, hope you’re having a good time!
Astro: boogie-woogie number begins
Sonny: (spoken) Hold onto your seats, folks, ‘cuz we’re gonna crank it up! Here we go now!
Sonny: (singing) When the Big Guy was done, and the fun had begun,
there were nine spinnin’ planets goin’ round that old sun
and comets, and ast’roids, and meteors too!
It’s called the solar system and before I am through
I’ll tell you ’bout the planets ‘cuz they’re not all the same.
I’ve been to every one of them and I know their names!
Angels: (spoken, not in unison) Venus! Jupiter! Saturn! Mars!
Sonny: (singing) They’re far away, but still they’re closer than all the stars!
Angels: (spoken, not in unison) Neptune! Uranus! And your little Earth!
Sonny: (singing) Pluto’s furthest from the sun, and Mercury’s first
The sun’s in the middle, it’s a fiery ball,
A million miles across, so it’s the biggest of all!
Sonny and Angels: (singing) Planetary Boogie!
Astro: saxophone ‘repeats’ the preceding phrase
Sonny and Angels: (singing) It’s the Planetary Boogie!

Astro: saxophone ‘repeats’ the preceding phrase

Sonny: (singing) Nine crazy planets dancin’ ’round the sun
and every one of them is having worlds of fun!
Sonny and Angels: (singing) Mercury’s hot! Pluto is not!
Sonny: (singing) And Saturn’s got a ring that wraps around the whole thing!
And Mars is red, Uranus is green,
but Venus is the brightest thing that I’ve ever seen.
Jupiter and Earth are both a beautiful blue
and Neptune’s spinning backwards from the rest of the crew!

Astro: music ends canned applause, whistles
Sonny: (spoken) I love them crazy planets. Yeah!
Astro: canned applause, whistles
Sonny: (spoken) Thank you very much! Hey, speaking of planets, Donald Duck and Goofy were in here a few minutes ago looking for Pluto. Man, are they a few million miles off, or what?
Astro: canned laughter, chirpy synthesizer sound effect
Sonny: (spoken) Did you know that a comet is a star with a tail? Come to think of it, Mickey Mouse is a star with a tail, too. Small world, huh?
Astro: a horn makes an ah-oo-gah noise, then an uptempo version of ‘It’s A Small World After All’ breaks down into discordant noise
Sonny: (spoken) Ooh, why did I start playing *that* tune? We use that on my planet Zork to break the enemy!
Astro: canned laughter
Sonny: (spoken) Hey, but really, compared to your sun, you guys really do have a small world. I mean, your sun is a hundred and nine times the diameter of Earth. How can something that big disappear at night? I stayed up all night last night trying to figure it out. And you know what? It finally dawned on me!
Astro: kettle drum, canned laughter
(Sonny’s Song List loops back to the beginning at this point, approximately every 25 minutes)
Sonny Takes Five–

Sonny Eclipse: Well, I can see my old buddy Mike Feedback, the technician up there in the control booth, is giving me the signal to take five. Now don’t go away, because we have some very special entertainment to follow.

Behind the scenes

Sonny’s Astro Organ is on top of a stage which raises into position from below, so whenever live acts replace his looped show, he will rise into the ceiling as they appear. The ‘Sonny Takes Five’ speech will precede the live entertainment, and then the ‘Sonny’s Introduction’ speech will precede Sonny’s triumphant return. Don’t expect to hear either of these obscure speeches unless a live show replaces Sonny.

Orlando cast members report that costumed characters do sometimes hang out in the Starlight Cafe’, especially if it is raining, taking a shortcut through the kitchen and trying to stay dry before parades, etc. Most often, these will be characters from Alice In Wonderland– such as the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, etc.– because the Starlight Cafe’ is right across from the Teacup ride. Wouldn’t it be cool, though, to see Donald Duck and Goofy standing on either side of the Astro Organ, right when Sonny Eclipse mentions them by name?

Some details, including the names suggested for Sonny’s relatives, are from the Imagination of Alex Newborn. Special thanks to the gang at MouseBits for posting the audio files, and the fine folks at MousePlanet for their wonderful photo archives. And a big, big thanks to Kal David for his performance.

Alex Newborn
Alex is a lifelong fan of the Star Wars movies and everything Disney, so his obsession with Star Tours comes as no surprise. Born in 1970, Alex visited Walt Disney World for the first time in 1975, and saw the original Star Wars film in its first theatrical run in 1977. He returned to Disney in the 80’s and the 90’s… riding STAR TOURS (twice!) on one fateful day in 1991. He has yet to visit Disney in the new millennium, waiting for both his children to be the required 40″ tall to ride STAR TOURS. “What I’d really like to see is a Tour chartered for the planet New Bornalex,” says Alex with a smile. The planet, mentioned first in Cloak of Deception, is a Tuckerization of Alex’s name, an honor bestowed on him in print by author Jim Luceno. Alex is currently at work on a partial realisation of his childhood Disney-in-miniature wish– he is constructing a hyper-accurate 1:18 scale Star Tours diorama to showcase his collection of park-exclusive action figures. In the meantime, Alex is always on the lookout for more STAR TOURS video or audio files, and other STAR TOURS memoribilia. Alex also is our site’s researcher, and comes with never seen before goodies, for your entertainment. Give him a round of applause guys.
